Reflection for Feb 7, 2012
Valentines Day is quickly approaching – do you remember when back in grade school for many this was a very tricky day-in my case anyway. You may remember thinking,"Would I get a few Valentine cards would I get any, would I get them from the pretty girl in the 3rd row?" Well at Rotary and expecially here at the Port Arthur Rotary Club we don’t have to worry – not that we send cards, but when you walk in that door next Tuesday (V.D.) you know that everyone in the room is your friend. And to look towards the rest of the world let me offer this from Mahatma Gandhi, Spiritual leader of India in the early 1900s, he said, “Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love.Reflection for Jan 31, 2012 I am thankful this week for the Rotary Events our club was involved in -- providing a community service to Thunder Bay- preparing and serving food at the Dew Drop Inn; participating in the planning for the Dance for Memories an event to raise funds for the Alzheimers Society; attending with other Rotarians the Chamber of Commerce AGM to here Phil Fontain's message of working together; experiencing the supportive atmosphere of the the four Rotary Clubs as they worked on joint projects at the bimonthly Canada Club meeting; the excitiement of the Rotary Rib Fest investigative meeting and the fellowship of our Rotary Bridge. Yes I am thankful to be a Rotarian so I can continue to serve my community in a meaningful way.
Rotary Reflection Jan 24 - Also for use at other gatherings As we gather here today as members of Rotary, we pray that we are ever mindful of opportunities to render our service to fellow citizens and to our community. Keeping in mind always the enduring values of life, exerting our efforts in those areas and on those things upon which future generations can build with confidence. Let us continue to strive to make a better world.
Reflection for Jan 17, 2012 During the last week we have witnessed a significant naval disaster. Please take this opportunity to reflect on Rotary and how item one in the Four Way Test is so important for those who accept or are charged with looking after the safety of others. This applies not only to captains, principals, drivers - most of us have accepted at one time this type of responsibility. So many situations could be better dealt with if all the information and the correct information was presented right from the start. People do act in common sense ways when they have the correct information. I am thankful to be part of an organization that has the four way test to help us make decisions. And of course the first test is : Of the things we think say or do “Is it the truth?
Reflection for Jan 10, 2012 As we meet with our contacts for the Rotary Radio Day Project we can also take advantage of this terrific opportunity to spread the Rotary message. Imagine the impact of all 80 members raising both the awareness of what Rotary has achieved and at the same time raising money to make our community and our world a better place.
Reflection for Jan 3, 2012 Now the new year has arrived, we can look back and reflect on the resolutions we have made a few short days ago. Perhaps you promised to get in better shape, lose weight and the like. I know I did. But the important one for me is to support this club in its projects to the best of my ability. If I can do a little each week, then with your help, we will make this year a successful one, a significant one, one in which we can reach the goal set by as our RI president Kalyan Banerjee: "We need to commit ourselves absolutely and fully and say, What I must do shall indeed be done."
Reflection for Dec 20, 2011 On Sunday as I spoke to those gathered for the Rotary Family Carol Sing, I talked about the Object of Rotary – that of our motto Service Above Self, and our belief in the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in this ideal of service. These beliefs tie in so well with the spirit of Christmas - international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Then I spoke about the orgins of the Carol Sing and the Christmas Cheer fund and how the Carol sing event is a wonderful example of how we do our Rotary work. We recognize a need in our community and then establish a way to assist. Always adding an ingredient of fun and fellowship both for our members and for the community at large. This is what we do and who we are. And I hope you can join me in saying, I am proud to be a member of this Rotary and of this club. Kevin HollowayPresident. 2011-2012
