NAVIGATOR SUMMARIES- MEETINGS OF APRIL 5, 12: 2011

MEETING of APRIL 5, 2011

Reception desk: Cheryl Merlo and Johnny Debakker.

 Scribe: Joseph Wasielewski.

Paul Harris Fellow: Johnny Debaker was awarded a surprise Paul Harris fellowship compliments of Maria Hudolin.

Guest speaker: Alexandra Erickson, our returning Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar.

Alexandra summarized her year on the Gold Coast in Queensland,Australia by showing a creative audio/video collage of her 14 months there which allowed a glimpse of the weather, sites and people.

Her host Rotary club was the Southport club. Rotary clubs she attended had an average of 20-40 members and carried out effective fundraising and community service projects, for example, distributing colon cancer screening kits.

She showed famous surfing beaches, the Sydney Opera House, the Twelve Apostles eroded limestone rock cliffs in Victoria, etc.

Interesting locals included an aboriginal man playing a didgeridoo who helped Alexandra remove a bug from hair and then he promptly ate it! He did offer her half, but no takers there.

For an adrenalin rush Alexandra experienced surfing, bungee jumping and sky diving.

All that aside she had a productive academic year at Bond University, graduating first in her class and receiving a Master's Degree in Business Communication.

Well done Alexandra and all the best in your future endeavors.

(This is an example of our Rotary Foundation dollars at work, ie. Rotary funds Ambassadorial Scholars US$26,000 for their academic year abroad.

Each year there are 2-3 scholarships available for qualified candidates in our District. Applications are submitted about a year and a half prior to the scholarship year.)

She was proudly thanked by District Governor Roly Turner.
