Dianna Semenick, outbound exchange student 2010 and 2011 was our speaker February 14, 2012. After planning for her exchange year to be in Thailand, changes were made to her plans due to unrest in that Asian country. Mexico became her destination. Dianna outlined her year in Guanajuato, Mexico sprinkled with many fascinating photos from her experience abroad. Matt Diegel introduced Dianna and Don Chase thanked her. Although not the presentation presented by Dianna, Click Here to see the powerpoint  that does give one a feel for the beauty of this central Mexican city.

New member Patrick Boileau did his Classification speech (attached) on February 7th. Patrick grew up in Sudbury and received his Honours Degree in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.  He worked for Brookfield Asset Management for several years, including two years in Brazil with the company’s real estate and power development groups.  Patrick then completed his Master’s degree in Real Estate Finance at the University of Florida. 

Patrick spent several years in Toronto working in the real estate and private equity investment groups at OMERS, a $50 billion pension fund for Ontario municipal employees. Patrick moved to Thunder Bay in 2010 to advise Goldcorp on energy infrastructure projects in Northern Ontario.  Patrick is an enthusiastic outdoorsman and enjoys playing soccer, badminton, and hockey with his local clubs.  He is involved with his community through Rotary Club and the young professional networks.  Patrick, who was married last summer,  enjoys traveling and is fluent in Portuguese and French. Past President David Legge welcomed Patrick to the Club and thanked him for his informative talk. Click here to view a copy of his presentation.

Chief of Police JP Levesque spoke at Rotary Jan 31st about various policing issues in the city. Chief Levesque was introduced by Police Commission member and PA Rotarian Jackie Dojack and thanked by Assistant District Governor Maria Hudolin. Click here to view the presentation.

Mayor Keith Hobbs spoke to the Club today. He was introduced by President Kevin Holloway, at which time, President Holloway bestowed the title of "Honorary member" on the Mayor. Mayor Hobbs was thanked by Member and Past President Colin Bruce.

Raymond Krisciunas P. Eng.was our speaker at our January 10th meeting. Ray is the Ministry of Transportation's Head of Region Structural Section in Thunder Bay, ON. Ray oversees all aspects of inspection, planning and engineering for 450 structures with annual capital program value of over $90 Million and has participated and overseen the design of over 300 bridge projects.  His presentation focused on the bridge work necessitated as a result of the four laning of the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Nipigon. Special attention was given to the Current River Bridge, Hodder Avenue overpass, McKenzie River Bridge and Nipigon River bridge.

Ray has published numerous articles related to wood bridge engineering and has received design awards from Canadian Institute of Steel Construction, Canadian Wood Council and Portland Cement Association. Ray was introduced by Don Smith and thanked by Pritam Lamba. Click Here to see a copy of his presentation.

One of the community projects that our Port Arthur Rotary Club supports is the Dew Drop Inn where we prepare and serve a meal one day each month.  Seen here is a large number of Rotarians along with family members and friends that came by to help serve in December!

Today at Rotary,  we had our special Christmas luncheon organized by Bernie Baxter and Rob Grady. Art Warwick is the new President elect and will take over on July 1st, 2012 from Kevin Holloway.  Below, President Kevin Holloway accompanies Rob Grady in some carols. Today at Rotary,  John Mason, Project Manager, Mining Services spoke to the Club. John is with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC).  Northwestern Ontario is home to the world's richest gold mine at Red Lake and destination for $475M in mineral exploration expenditures in 2011. NWO is blessed with mineral endowment that includes precious and base metals, industrial minerals, and building stone. Click here to view a PDF of John's presentation.

John Mason is a graduate of Lakehead University and is a Registered Professional Geoscientist in Ontario. He has 36 years experience in geology and mineral deposits, through a career with the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, as Thunder Bay Manager of the Resident Geologist Program for NWO . John started in June with the Thunder Bay Economic Development Commission as Project Manager -Mining Services, a position designed to maximize economic benefit to the City of Thunder Bay and region, from the exploration and mining industries.
